Michael Card

michael card Speaking of introspective, bearded, Christian artists (see previous post), Michael Card is another artist that I’ve enjoyed for a long time, and another artist that seems to fly under the popular Christian music radar, so to speak.

And really, what I mean by that is this: there is only a certain amount or range of music that you’re going to hear on any local Christian music station. There seems to be two extremes that Christian music stations careen between, and that would be extreme alternative Christian music vs. top 40 Christian pop music that honestly is really not my cup of tea, but I do like some of it.

Back to my whole point (I do have a point, eventually). Michael Card is an amazing artist, he’s got solid, Scriptural music backed up by some pretty impressive musical artistry, but most of his stuff does not get played on the run of the mill Christian stations because….

it’s not commercial.

Let me get up on my soapbox for a second. That just tans my hide that there is SO MUCH good Christian music out there that gets ignored simply because the lead singer doesn’t have a cute blonde hairdo, or they don’t talk incessantly about river analogies (!!!), or they aren’t very photogenic. Really burns me. So I end up NOT listening to the local CCM station because they tend to play the same tired songs over and over and over. The alternative station rocks, btw.

Back to Michael Card (for pete’s sake!). He’s got a great website, and is doing a LOT of touring apparently right now, as well as a great Bible study in every issue of CCM Magazine, an excellent choice on their part.
