American Idol 6 Contestant Jordin Sparks Toured with Smitty
Did you know that Jordin Sparks, a current contestant on American Idol Season 6, toured with Michael W. Smith on his 2005-2006 Christmastime concert tour? Read what Smitty had to say about Jordin:
Two or three years ago my manager stopped by the house with a great young girl named Jordin Sparks. Ironically they stopped by when George Huff, a former IDOL contestant, was at the house. The three of us wound up around the piano and I remember thinking that I was playing and singing with two of the greatest voices I had heard in a long time.
And Jordin, like George, had a smile and personality as big and inviting as her voice. Jordin went on to do two tours with me – CHRISTMASTIME 2005 and CHRISTMASTIME 2006. If you saw either of those shows – you’ll remember her voice and her smile.
You’ve got to visit Michael W. Smith’s site and see the other comments he had about his experience with Jordin and her desires for her experience on American Idol.
You can bet I’ll be covering her progress specifically on my Idol Stalker site.

Smith, along with comments Smitty himself wrote about Jordin when they first met (and oddly enough another American Idol contestant was already at Smitty’s house) and more details on the Christian Music Fan site. The one thing that I guess I don’t understand about American Idol is what’s the threshold for a contestant to still be considered “undiscovered.” She’s toured with Michael Smith, released a CD and was working on a second album, models, and was even on America’s Most Talented kid in 2003. Jordin’s a talented girl and I’m enjoying watching her this season, but I’m just not sure she’s “undiscovered talent.”

American Idol considers someone who is undiscovered someone who hasn’t signed with a label yet. Anyone can record a CD and independently sell a few copies, but being signed to a label and being “mainstream” is the difference. There are actually several contestants this year who are “professional” singers who get paid for singing and tour, backup, have CDs, bands, etc. ie: Rudy, Sabrina, Chris S., Melinda, Blake, Brandon….

I think that Jordin deserves to win. I am such a huge fan of her. I saw her in both Christmas concerts for Michael; and the first time I saw her auditioning in american idol I told my husband “That’s the girl that sang with Michael, oh my God”. She is undiscovered because she hasn’t made it yet. I hope she makes it, I’ll definitely buy her CD.
