Listening to Some Old-time Gospel
For whatever reason today we ended up popping a cassette tape into the player and started listening to some old-school southern gospel music at the office. What made it even more interesting is that the cassette was homemade from an actual vinyl album. That gave us the full effect of the almost incoherent scratching sound in the album.
I grew up in a little town in Kentucky and my dad was the pastor of a small country church. Whenever we would have musical groups for concerts, there were almost always a southern gospel group or quartet.
That style of music is not something I would ever purchase for my musical collection, but when it’s played I drop into childhood memory mode and enjoy the tunes that come flowing out of the speakers.
What style of music, or music groups do you hear that bring back the yester years for you?

Petra and Smitty!
Petra, of course!
But not so much smitty.
I was more a Mylon fan!
Of course I have to mention Steve, the god father of Christian music, but I still listen to him all the time, so it doesn’t remind me of yester year…
Are you talking Steven Curtis Chapman, or Steve Taylor? Both classic fathers of Christian music, just completely different genres.
True but I had Steve Taylor in mind specifically. That title “Godfather of Christian music” was a quote from an interview with him and Amy Grant back in ‘87 or so. It was at an awards show, perhaps one of the first CMAs.
Oh, and I met and talked to John Fischer a couple years back. He’s written a couple good books since leaving the music genre and I’ve really enjoyed his compendum book Saint Ben. He can be found over at the Fisch Tank.
