Mandisa Missing Her Niche
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone make the statement that former American Idol contestant couldn’t sing. Crosswalk won’t argue with me on that point either, they in fact say “One thing’s for sure: This girl can sing. Her voice can fill any genre.”
The problem they say though is that her album doesn’t really feel like there’s much focus. She can sing so well across so many different styles that she’s not held back to just one, but is that a problem?
For someone with such a great voice, is she really missing one at the same time?

Being a musician, I find this to be one of the most annoying parts of what I do. I love so many types of music, and it’s hard to limit myself to one genre. When you do, it almost feels like you’re stifling a bit of yourself sometimes, and frankly, you risk every song sounding the same. If you don’t, those who hear only one or two of your songs may be disappointed when they hear the rest of your album, or you get people that feel like there’s no focus, like maybe you’re not sure where you belong and they’re not quite sure what to do with you. The challenge is trying to bring all those influences one has together, and keep enough of them so that every song sounds different, yet they all have enough of the elements that are supposed to make up your genre. While I’m well aware of how frustrated people get when they can’t put you in one genre, I have loads of respect for those musicians out there like Mandesa who can move smoothly between different styles and still sound completely like themselves.
