Group Urges Obama to Drop Donnie McClurkin from Tour

by Jason Bean on October 23rd, 2007

Donnie McClurkin, gospel singer, is touring with Barack Obama to help raise funds for his campaign and run for the presidency. A gay rights group is urging Obama to drop McClurkin because of his opinions on homosexuality being a choice.

McClurkin is a Grammy Award winner who performed at the Republican National Convention in 2004. He told AP Radio in an interview that September that he was “once involved with those desires and those thoughts,” which he attributed to being raped at 8 and 13.

“That’s what thrust me into it, and then God delivered me from that and gave me back who I really am and my true purpose,” McClurkin said.

Without getting into a huge discussion about politics, what do you think of this news?

I dont think you can NOT talk about it without it getting political…I cant understand why any Christian artist would support someone who calls us homophobe’s and goes so completely and obvious against what we believe as Christians;…..

Which is exactly what Obama said about Donnie McClurkin’s statements (Quoted from Obama statement -”I have consistently spoken directly to African-American religious leaders about the need to overcome the homophobia that persists in some parts our community so that we can confront issues like HIV/AIDS and broaden the reach of equal rights in this country,” Obama said. “I strongly believe that African Americans and the LGBT community must stand together in the fight for equal rights. And so I strongly disagree with Reverend McClurkin’s views and will continue to fight for these rights as president of the United States to ensure that America is a country that spreads tolerance instead of division.”)

Hopefully, Mr. McClurkin will take their advise and run as fas as he can from the Obama camp, because as the Bible says very clearly, you cannot serve 2 masters!

Donny McClurkin is in a really neat position. He’s done things with both parties, and he’s seen things from both sides of the spectrum where homosexuality is concerned. I personally think it’s wonderful that Obama seems to value him and his input, and I’m just praying for God to bring truth, power and freshness to Donny every time he opens his mouth to speak to people about God and about what he’s been through.
