Winter Jam 2008 Concert Coverage
The Roanoke Times newspaper/website had a good story about the Winter Jam 2008 concert that was in town on Saturday night at Roanoke Civic Center.
They were on their way to the Roanoke Civic Center for Winter Jam 2008, a Christian rock-and-pop-themed music festival whose fans filled up the center’s parking lot one full hour before showtime. Dozens of church vans from many parts of Virginia and West Virginia helped fill the lot.
“I believe these musicians … they’re doing God’s work,” Coiner said as he and Carter and hundreds of other concertgoers filed down Williamson Road toward the event. “Anything you can find in secular music, you can find in Christian music.”
What do you think? Can you find anything in Christian music to match secular music?
The article spent more time talking about the Winter Jam concert being only $10 at the door and no actual tickets sold.
Not much time was spent at all on the actual groups that performed or what people thought of the concert itself, it was more about people’s general thoughts of Christian concerts period.
With acts like MercyMe, Skillet, Barlow Girl and even former American Idol contestant Mandisa, you’d think someone would have written a little bit about one of the actual performers.
Anyone out there attend this event in Virginia or one of the earlier opening city tour stops? Let us know, I’d love to hear a real review of the bands that performed and not just the idea of the concert.

We went to the Cincinnati “Winter Jam” and it was amazing! First, the wide range of sounds from Mandisa to Mercy Me to Group 1 Crew to SKILLET in the same line up. The event sold out (about 10,000 people). Each group did an amazing job musically. In addition, there seemed to be an intentional effort to share testimonies and many challenges put out to the audience. Therefore I was even more impressed with the spiritual dynamic at this event. My favorite was SKILLET, but they may have thrown some of the parents into shock with their “in your face” hard rock show & the 30 foot towers of fire. You have to see this to believe it. In addition, there were approx 1000 who made decisions for Christ.
